1. Abu Hassan (Ali Caravan) — Jaffa
The most famous hummus in Israel, and it lives up to it — but get there early.
Abu Hassan, also known as Ali Caravan, has been serving hummus in Jaffa for decades and is the default answer to the question of where the best hummus in the country is.
The hummus is exceptionally smooth and warm, the masabacha is the order most regulars make, and the operation is stripped back to essentials: a bowl, pita, onion, pickles, out.
It closes when the day's batch is finished, which is often well before 2pm, and there is usually a queue.
Good to know: Order the mishlash — hummus, masabacha and ful in one bowl — and get there before noon.
